How Children perceive their Grandparents

Grandma was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she had done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Gramma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good‑bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good‑bye.

My young grandson called the other day to wish me happy birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 80. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

VFW Summer 2024 Blood Drive Results

The Rock River Valley Blood Center was set up in our Hall on August 13th and 15th. We had a total of eighty-nine people show up to donate blood, with 86 units of blood collected! Thank you to all who donated!

Our next Blood Drive will be held in November. We are looking for an equally large turnout of Volunteer Donors at this Blood Drive. Thanks for giving!

VFW Golf Outing

FORE!! On Saturday, September 14th, the Roscoe VFW Golf Outing will kick off with registration at the Red Barn Golf Course at 10:00 AM, and a shotgun start promptly at 10:30 AM. The format will be best ball, and 18 holes will be played.

The $70 per person registration fee includes golf, a cart, on-course skills competition, beer, and dinner afterward at the Roscoe VFW. If you would like to participate in the dinner only, the cost is $30.00. Fees MUST be paid by September 3rd!

The golf is limited to the first 48 people signing up.

Meat Raffle

A regular activity sponsored by the VFW/Auxiliary is the Meat Raffle, held every Saturday afternoon from 2:00 ‑ 4:00 PM. During this activity, eight (8) packages of meat are raffled off, with the first number drawn winning a package of meat, the second number drawn winning pull‑tabs, and the third number drawn winning $3.00. This occurs for eight rounds, after which there may be two packs of (25) pull-tabs each, and a 50/50 raffle, with the winner awarded half of the money collected for that round. At the conclusion of the Meat Raffle, all non‑winning tickets are thrown together, and three thickets are drawn, the winners choosing from a $20, a $10, or a $5 bill.

The Auxiliary hosts the Meat Raffle the first & third Saturdays of each month; the VFW works the remaining Meat Raffles each month.

So come on down, enjoy the fun and camaraderie, and DON’T FORGET YOUR FRIENDLY BARTENDER!

RED SHIRT FRIDAY continues every Friday in the Canteen. The purpose of wearing a Red Shirt on Friday is to R emember E veryone D eployed. We will strive to continue wearing Red Shirts on Friday until there are no more military personnel deployed!

If you wear a Red Shirt into the Canteen on any Friday, you will receive your second drink free, after purchasing your first drink. (One free drink per person each Friday!)

Remember, we are wearing Red Shirts to R emember E veryone D eployed – not just to get a free drink!

Taco Tuesday/Wienie Wednesday/Pulled Pork Thursday

Taco Tuesday continues every Tuesday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. These delicious tacos, prepared by our volunteers, are available as either hard shell tacos, or soft-shell taco. A taco salad is also available. These tacos/salads are also available as a carry-out item for a quick and easy lunch.

Wienie Wednesday continues every Wednesday from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Mindy will be preparing Hot Dogs, or Brats, with a dill spear and chips, with other condiments available, or Nacho Dogs. Stop in on Wednesday to have a wiener!

Pulled Pork Thursday - Every Thursday during September, from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Anita will be alternating between serving Pulled Pork sandwiches, or chicken salad sandwiches, with chips, cole slaw or potato salad. Stop in on Thursday for more good food!

Remember, now available anytime, we are serving Nacho Chips with Cheese, and Nacho Chips Supreme! Ask your friendly bartender for details!

6th District Meeting

The next 6th District meeting will be held on Sunday, September 15th at 2:00 PM at Roscoe VFW Post #2955, 11385 Second Street, in Roscoe.

There will be a luncheon served at 1:00 PM, prior to the meeting. Please let Commander Bill Graves or President JoAnn Cleland know if you are attending, so they can make reservations for the luncheon.

2024 Fall Festival

This year’s Fall Festival will be held on Friday, September 6th through Sunday, September 8th. We will be serving food all three days. The menu will consist of Roast Beef sandwiches, fried foods, such as french fries, chicken wings, onion rings, cheese curds, frozen grapes, and pickles-on-a-stick, plus soda and water.

The Fall Festival Parade will be held on Sunday, with the Roscoe VFW Color Guard leading the parade. Step-off will be at 11:00 AM.

Set-up for Fall Festival will be Thursday, September 5th at 4:00 PM. Help will be needed for set-up, and for serving and cooking all three days of the Fall Festival; Friday, Sept. 6, 5 - 10 PM; Saturday, Sept. 7, 10:00 AM - 10 PM; and Sunday,

Sept. 80, from Noon - 6:00 PM.

Please volunteer to help, if only for a couple of hours!

The Jamie Cox Motorcycle Rally went off without a hitch. The breakfast was delicious, and everyone worked hard to make it that way. THANK YOU ALL!

The following weekend was the Corn Roast, and again, we ALL worked hard to make the day a memorable one!

Our Auxiliary crew will be helping the VFW at the Fall Festival on September 6, 7 & 8th. Come out to Leland Park and support your VFW at the food stand. Don’t forget the Fall Festival parade on Sunday, September 8th at 11:00 AM.

Last, but not least, the Auxiliary will be serving a lunch at the 6th District meeting on September 15th at the Post Home, starting at 1:00 PM. The lunch menu will be pulled pork sandwiches, with cole slaw, chips, and dessert. All our Post and Auxiliary members are invited to attend. Lunch is $10 per person.

The Auxiliary will be hosting the first THREE Meat Raffles in September. They will be September 7th, 14th, and 21st! Come on down and win some meat!

The Auxiliary is selling the Illinois VFW Auxiliary President’s pin again this year. The cost of the pin is $4.00. Please contact an Auxiliary member to purchase your pin.

August was, and September will be, challenging months. But, as usual, we will complete our tasks and be ready for the next challenge!

First and foremost, I would like to thank Jeff Weaver for putting together the Breakfast and Kick-off for the 6th Annual Jaimie Cox Memorial Motorcycle Run. Thanks to Anita for the sausage gravy, Corky for scrambling the eggs, Gene for cooking the sausage, JoAnn for making biscuits, and to Cathy, Lou, Tom, Tasha, Adam, and Ann for serving the breakfast. Also, thanks to Mike, Rick, Morrie, and Michelle for washing dishes. Over 350 people attended the event. Thanks also to Mindy, Bonnie, Anita, and Val for coming in early to tend bar.

Another BIG Thanks to Jeff for heading up a VERY successful Corn Boil again this year. Thanks to Adam & Natasha Hale for making the Corn Dogs – they were a hit again this year! Also, to Corky for cooking the delicious brats, and hot dogs. Thanks to all the other people who worked all afternoon to make the event successful.

Don’t forget to volunteer for the Fall Festival September 6th - September 8th. Also don’t forget the parade on Sunday, September 8th at 11:00 AM.

You are reading the Post newsletter for the month of September. That means you are interested in what’s going on at the Post this month. You have paid your yearly dues, or have made the decision to be a Life Member, OR you are just checking things out on what is happening at the VFW!

We welcome your interest, but you are missing out on a lot that this Post can offer you. It all starts by YOU taking the next step by attending the monthly Post meeting, which is held at the Post Home on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.

You do not have to volunteer to be a committee chairman, or take on a job that will take up your family time. At the Post meeting, ideas and projects are presented and voted upon by the members who are in attendance. This means YOU have a say in what is happening at our Post.

Our Post membership is well over 250 members, but we only have 12 to 15 members who are submitting suggestions and ideas at the Post meetings. The members who are attending the meetings have been doing a fantastic job carrying out all the activities and improvements you see at the Post and read about in the newsletter.

Just think what we could accomplish by adding 10 or more active members who would attend the Post meeting and give us new ideas and suggestions! Take the time to come to a Post meeting, and take part in the process. The Post meeting is the most important activity of the VFW!

VFW & VFW Auxiliary Monthly Meetings

This month the VFW and the Auxiliary both hold their monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month (this month it is September 3rd).

The Auxiliary meets at 6:00 PM, the VFW meets at 7:00 PM at the Post Home, 11385 2nd Street.

All VFW and Auxiliary members are invited to attend their respective meetings.

CEO’s and Beer

The CEOs of four large beer companies were meeting to discuss the problems and the future of their industry. At the end of the meeting, they decided to go to a restaurant for dinner.

The CEO of Budweiser ordered a Bud Light.
The CEO of Miller ordered a Miller Lite.
The CEO of Coors ordered a Coors Light.
The CEO of Guinness ordered a Coke.
The CEO of Budweiser asks him. “Why did you order a Coke?”
The Guinness CEO replied. “If you guys aren’t drinking beer, then neither am I!”

Notes from The Editor

State and County Fairs have run their course, the National VFW Convention has come and gone, school has started, and we are now looking forward to the three-day Labor Day weekend. When that concludes, summer will truly be over! But don’t worry, there are enough activities taking place in September to satisfy everyone! The month starts off with the three-day weekend, followed immediately by the Post/Auxiliary meetings on Tuesday, September 3rd. Fall Festival is the big event this month, on September 6,7, & 8. This three-day event will require plenty of volunteers, so please help!

Even though the upcoming weekend is a three-day holiday, PLEASE , take some time out to reflect upon, and honor, all our active-duty troops, who do not have a holiday weekend, and all our veterans.

Please read through the entire newsletter, attend your respective VFW or Auxiliary meetings, and take advantage of the events the VFW/Auxiliary has to offer; come on down and support your organization!

For all you grandparents out there, Sunday, September 8th is your special day - Grandparents’ Day! If possible, make sure to give your grand-kids an extra squeeze, or call them up to say Hi! I know it should be the other way around, but do not wait for that to happen!
